Are You Still Using a Mercury Thermometer?
Are you still using an industrial thermometer that is filled with mercury? You may be and not even know it. Unlike some components in pressure systems, industrial thermometers are very hardy and rarely break or fail, negating the need to replace them with any frequency. In normal circumstances this would be a good trait. Unfortunately this longevity has led to many mercury filled thermometers still being in use today.
Recent years have seen a big push to reduce the use of mercury in both personal and commercial settings due to its associated health risks. According to the EPA, mercury exposure can harm the human nervous system, especially in children. However, there are now suitable alternatives to mercury filled thermometers.
We carry a full range of spirit filled thermometers. These thermometers are filled with a hydrocarbon fluid that is environmentally safe. You can easily tell if the thermometer that you are using is mercury or spirit filled by looking at the color of the fluid in it: mercury is red, hydrocarbon is blue.
