Large industrial machines benefit from this technology, in which Contrinex light curtains surround the working area with an infrared barrier. Compared with a physical barrier, much more useful space is left free and there is no reduction in visibility around the machine. Typical applications are metal cutting machines, printing systems, packaging and assembly lines. The YCA safety access control series comprises models with from 3 to 6 beams and beam-gaps of 300 mm, 400 mm, or 500 mm. They are suitable for detecting persons entering a dangerous area and bringing the potentially harmful machine cycle to a safe stop. Devices can operate across a distance of up to 50 meters and can also be used with mirror columns to create a protected perimeter. This technology is certified Type 4 by TUV according to IEC 61496-1 and -2 and ISO 13849-1. Users can also set the operating range to 15 m or 50 m simply by means of wiring configuration. Two communication channels are also available to avoid cross-talk when two pairs of light curtains are close to each other.

Small machines with limited space tend to use Contrinex light curtains with finger resolution (14 mm) which allow detection of smaller objects with a short response time. Light curtains for finger protection offer the highest degree of protection and are suitable for machines where the operator works close to the hazard. Whenever space is limited and the safety distance must be short, finger detection is a good option as its resolution is about half that of hand detection and it will detect the object sooner than hand resolution will do. Consequently, this sort of light curtain is used in applications like tool stations, pharmaceutical work cells and small press machines. Light curtains with finger resolution are available in robust housings with a profile of 42 mm x 48 mm and an enclosure rating of IP65 and IP67. The standard associated with this design is Type 4 according to IEC 61496-1 and -2 and ISO 13849-1. Protective length extends up to 1.7 meters and maximum operating range is 3.5 m. Two communication channels can be selected to avoid cross-talk between two different pairs of light curtains that may be installed next to each other.

These devices provide cost-effective protection and an appropriate safety distance from the hazard in the machine. Contrinex types are particularly strong and well sealed in housings with an enclosure rating of IP65 and IP67. Slim (26 mm x 26 mm) or standard (42 mm x 48 mm) light curtains are available as Type 2 or Type 4 devices according to IEC 61496-1 and -2 and ISO 13849-1. The protective length extends up to 1.9 meters and short response times allow the user to reduce the safety distance from a hazardous application. Two communication channels can be selected to avoid cross-talk between two pairs of light curtains that may be installed next to each other. If the hazard in the application is limited and the risk assessment confirms that no severe injury can be caused, Type 2 light curtains are preferred. If the hazard is serious, Type 4 devices are required. Most applications use Type 4 to ensure the highest safety level. However, for some applications Type 2 is more than adequate. Type 2 devices are also suitable when the machine needs to be protected from the user, rather than the contrary. For example: a small, high-precision, pick-and-place robot is unlikely to injure the user during operation, but the user could damage or disrupt the robot. With protection up to 12 meters (standard housing) or 8 meters (slim housing), these products can be used in a wide range of applications, including large assembly lines for which a long distance is specified. Typical applications are press machines, metal forming machines and automotive assembly lines.
